3 Trending Travel Destinations for Curious Families

You and your family are ready for an immersive adventure—to a place that’s sure to capture your hearts and your imagination. You’re looking to do more than simply lounge by the pool all day. You yearn to learn, grow, and discover together.

The only question now is: where to jet off to? You could choose a tried-and-true destination that’s long been popular with families. Or you could opt for something just a bit more off the beaten path. If you’re interested in option two, keep reading—I’m sharing three of my favorite “trending” destinations for families that are just starting to gain in popularity. Get ready for fewer crowds, and way more fun:

1) The Italian Dolomites

You’ve heard of Rome, Florence, and Venice … maybe even Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. But the Dolomite Mountains in Italy’s north still fly under the radar—though this may just be the most stunning region in the country. My family loved our Dolomites vacation; it was the perfect balance of active adventure and utter relaxation, all set against a drop-dead gorgeous backdrop of snow-capped peaks and quaint mountain villages.

We rented a car in Venice and drove to the Dolomites from there, staying at the five-star Grand Hotel Savoia Cortina d’Ampezzo (it’s a mouthful, but the hotel comes with amazing views!). As we hiked the lush valley trails between the mountains, we would encounter cows grazing the grasses with tinkling bells tied to their necks. It was like something straight out of a storybook!

2) Belize

You don’t have to hop on a 20+-hour flight to experience a thrilling underwater adventure. While Australia is famous for the Great Barrier Reef, there’s actually a rival reef worth exploring that’s much closer to home. Belize, in Central America, boasts the second largest coral reef system in the world, in addition to stunning white-sand beaches and laid-back coastal resorts.

Snorkeling and scuba diving are huge here, and unlike with Australia, you can technically go from your home in the states to donning a wetsuit in well under 24 hours. If your family is especially adventurous, consider a chartered boat tour to the mysterious Great Blue Hole. This massive marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize’s Lighthouse Reef atoll attracts divers from all around the world; my twin girls dove there during a summer camp spent in Belize and raved about the experience!

3) Portugal

Considered Europe’s coolest country, Portugal is becoming a popular destination. But compared to European heavyweights like France, Italy, and the UK, Portugal still feels less discovered.

In fact, Portugal is a wonderful place to experience some “classic” European experiences without so many crowds. You can sip world-class port wine in the Douoro Valley on a getaway reminiscent of a Tuscany idyll. Instead of Greece’s busy islands, head to Portugal’s Algarve Coast to enjoy sailing through turquoise waters and exploring marine caves via private yacht. Of course, there’s a unique Portugal flair to it all—like the iconic terracotta roofs of Lisbon, the well-preserved fortresses in Sintra, and verdant national parks filled with dramatic mountain peaks.
